Diagnose This System

Can you diagnose this heat pump?

The Drawing of the split system heat pump below represents a system you are diagnosing. This machine has a common proplem that is often misdiagnosed as another common propblem. Here is the information you will ned to get started.

Customer complaint: system is cooling but not well enough to keep the house at a comfortable temperature. Sometimes it quits cooling in the afternoon but begins cooling again in the early evening.

Out door temperature: 90F
Indoor return temperature: 80F
Indoor wetbulb temperature: 62F
Type of metering device: orifice (piston)

In the drawing of the split sytem below you will notice that the suction pressure, liquid pressure, suction temperature and liquid temperature are shown as if you were standing next to the machine evaluating it with your gauges and thermometers. These pressures and temperatures represent how the system is actually operating.


 

Below the drawing of the sytem you will find the information required to determine how the system should be operating. Compare this information with the actual operation to diagnose the problem with this system. On the left you will find the pressure chart for this machine, in the middle a superheat chart and on the right a TP chart. If you click on them they will  enlarge so that you can read them easily.
